Andrea teaches maths at a college of further education in the North of Italy. He just completed a 2 week intensive 1:1 course, where he lived and studied with his teacher.

Here's what he wrote about his motivation for studying English and his thoughts about homestay learning:

"Nowadays, a good knowledge of the English language is an indispensible tool for people working in the fields of education or research.  Certainly, any communication between researchers from different countries happens by means of the English language.

Previously, in Italy, fluency in English was not needed by teachers of Mathematics.  However, a good knowledge of English is going to become an important tool for High School teachers, even for teachers who do not teach foreign languages.

This is a consequence of the fact that students graduating from High School will increasingly need to be able to study or work using the English language.  For this reason, there will be some important changes in Italian schools in the next few years as some subjects, for example Mathematics, Biology and Electronics, will be taught partly in English instead of Italian.

For this reason, I, as someone with a PhD and a keen interest in research, as well as being a teacher of Mathematics, decided it was time to improve my English.  However, even though my reading skills are mid-upper intermediate, my listening and speaking skills were only elementary and pre-intermediate respectively.

Such skills are too low to be able to teach Mathematics effectively using the English language and so I decided to apply for an English course in which the teacher interacts only with me using only the English language. This work method has ‘forced’ me to improve my ability to comprehend the spoken language.

The course was very helpful as I learned a lot more about how English sounds are pronounced.  I interacted with my teacher and her family in English throughout my stay and I have begun to feel more familiar with the sounds of spoken English that were previously unknown to me.

I also enjoyed listening to English television and discussing news items.  I will recommend Acorn English Homestay to my colleagues."
